Visual and Performing Arts

The Visual and Performing Arts program at Erie Day School nurtures creativity, expression, and confidence by engaging students in a full range of artistic experiences.

In music, students explore the elements of sound, pitch, dynamics, and tone color as they build a foundation in music theory. They learn to read and write musical notation, participate in hands-on activities such as playing instruments, singing, moving, and composing, and gain experience performing in small groups. Field trips further enrich their understanding, as students study music across the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary periods, along with the composers who defined them.

In visual arts, students are immersed in a choice-based studio environment that encourages exploration and self-expression. They learn and apply the elements and principles of design to create two- and three-dimensional works, experimenting with both traditional and contemporary media. Along the way, they examine art movements from diverse historical and cultural perspectives and learn to make intentional artistic choices using a variety of tools and techniques.

Beyond the classroom, Erie Day School celebrates the arts through memorable events and performances. The annual EDS Playhouse production invites students to shine on stage, while instrumental lessons in piano, guitar, violin, viola, and cello provide opportunities for individual growth. The school community also comes together for Friday Morning Meetings, Grandparent & Special Friend Day, and the annual Arts Walk—events that showcase student creativity and bring families together in celebration of the arts.

At Erie Day School, the arts are not an afterthought—they are woven into the fabric of learning, giving students the confidence to express themselves and the courage to share their voices with the world.
